Data Engineer
Location: Manchester (hybrid – 3 days a week in office)
Salary: £65,000 - £70,000 + bonus and benefits
Type: Permanent, full-time
The opportunity
Our client, a well-known international consumer brand, is part-way through a major data modernisation programme and is building out its data engineering team. They're replatforming their data and reporting estate onto a modern Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran and Azure stack, retiring legacy SQL Server warehouses along the way. The pace is fast, the scope spans multiple international markets, and the work is highly visible to senior leadership.
This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys building well-tested, reliable pipelines on a modern stack and wants to be part of a high-velocity delivery team.
What you'll be doing
- Building and maintaining ingestion pipelines (Fivetran) and transformations (dbt) on Snowflake.
- Developing and operating data integrations across Azure data services (Function Apps, Logic Apps, Service Bus, Data Factory).
- Supporting the controlled migration and decommissioning of legacy SQL Server warehouses – reconciliation, parallel running and clean cutover.
- Writing and maintaining tests, embedding them into CI/CD pipelines so broken changes don't reach production.
- Owning data quality, observability, performance and cost for the pipelines you build.
- Taking part in peer code review, Agile ceremonies, and clear documentation so others can pick up your work.
- Occasionally supporting critical delivery windows and incidents outside normal hours when the programme demands it.
What we're looking for
Essential
- 3+ years' commercial data engineering experience on a modern data stack.
- Strong SQL and hands-on experience with a modern cloud data warehouse (Snowflake preferred; BigQuery, Redshift, Synapse or Databricks considered).
- Hands-on dbt experience – building and testing models.
- Experience with an ELT tool such as Fivetran (or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of Azure data services (Function Apps, Logic Apps, Service Bus, Data Factory or similar).
- Comfortable with Git, CI/CD and standard PR-based workflows.
- Good written and verbal communication, and comfort in fast-paced, sprint-based delivery.
- Right to work in the UK without sponsorship.
Desirable
- Experience reconciling or migrating data off a legacy SQL Server (or similar) estate onto a cloud platform.
- Python for data tooling and automation.
- SnowPro or relevant Azure certification.
- Experience in a high-volume, multi-site or multi-market consumer business.
What's on offer
- Competitive Salary + 10% Annual bonus
- Private medical, pension and life assurance.
- Hybrid working from Manchester (3 days a week in office).
- The chance to deliver a flagship modernisation on a modern, clean stack.
